The European countries are expecting a shrinking population and a rising number of old people. How will this affect labour markets, economic growth, the efficiency of the economy and the social system?

Two projects were carried out on this topic:
  • In cooperation with the Brookings Institution (Washington) and other institutes of the Tokyo Club Foundation for Global Studies, the economic and social consequences of the ageing process in the industrialized countries were analysed. (Publication: Brookings Papers 1998)
  • In cooperation with the Institute for Employment Research (University of Warwick, UK) the effect of ageing on economic efficiency and the future staff management of companies in selected European countries was investigated. (Publication: Institute for Employment Research 1999)

Both these projects concluded that ageing is one of the major problems for the European countries and for Germany in particular. The existing pension system will not be able to cope with this problem under current conditions. Far reaching adjustments in the social system will be necessary.

Companies are poorly prepared to work with an ageing workforce. The manpower strategies still need to be developed.
