The amount and structure of vacancies are among the white areas of official labour market statistics. To fill this gap, regular surveys of companies and public institutions were conducted since 1989 in western and eastern Germany. The data are used to quantify vacancies, to show their qualitative composition and to forecast the cycle of labour demand. They are the basis for measuring the labour market mismatch and to identify the barriers to manpower recruitment.
